To answer your question, Hedge Fund REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) do exist and many are emerging as the popularity of real estate investing continues to rise. These funds allow for long and short holdings of real estate assets, thus hedging losses in favor of ratcheted gains. But you do not technically "buy" real estate in one of these funds. The fund owns the real estate in a trust, and you own a piece of the fund. As the value of the total assets in the funds grows, so does your stake in the fund and thus your net worth.
